An engrossing and affecting account of survivors of the world's first atomic bombing

A remarkably concise and well written account of the stories of survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. I had long known about his book, but had never read it. I read this slim volume in one sitting and it was even more immediate because it was a first printing from 1946. Hersey's account is vivid and makes you feel like you are there with the survivors during the bombing and the immediate aftermath as they try to help others as well as survive themselves in the horrifying moments and days after the bombing. Hersey was brave to write such an honest account so soon after the war's end and victory for the Allies. I hope it had a big effect on those in the US who came to realize the terror of nuclear war. There will always be arguments about whether the bombing was right or not, and it may never be satisfactorily settled. I am left wondering how the people he profiled lived in the decades after the bombing. Something to research.
We should read this and reread it occasionally so we never forget the horrors of nuclear war. Maybe that's one good thing to say about the Terminator film series. It also reminds us of the horror of total war.
Thanks to Amazon too, for making quality used books available to us at low prices. I'm buying more books now that I ever did before, albeit used ones. Better to recycle than kill new trees.
