Well worth it

This is a special, original magic book.
It is full of magic tricks for you to do.
Even so, it is full of tips on how to be a magician including the bits and pieces that go into a successful performance.
Focused on novices, a professional will find it worthy of attention and gain from reading it.
Well written, too, in a simple to understand style.
Read, study and learn from it. Well worth it.

A wonderful collection of magical effects and advice

This is a small well written book that covers tricks primarily aimed at beginning to intermediate level magicians. Also included is superb advice on performing, tips to increase your skill, and most importantly, what is needed to truly entertain a group (it's more than just learning a few tricks). The book is loaded with useful information without being overwhelming. A nice addition to anyone's magical library.

Fifteen short texts, each accompanied by Tan's signature black-and-white and full-color artwork, take the mundane world and transform it into a place of magical wonders. In the opening tale, a water buffalo sits in an abandoned suburban lot, offering silent but wise direction to those youngsters who are patient enough to follow his guidance. In "Eric," the title character (a tiny, leaflike creature) visits a family as a foreign exchange student and fascinates them with his sense of wonder. His parting gift to the family is sure to warm even the coldest heart. Other stories describe the fate of unread poetry, the presence of silent stick figures who roam the suburbs, or an expedition to the edge of a map. In spirit, these stories are something akin to the wit and wisdom of Shel Silverstein. The surrealist art of Rene Magritte also comes to mind, but perhaps Chris Van Allsburg's beloved The Mysteries of Harris Burdick (Houghton, 1984) comes closest as a comparable work. For the quirky and thoughtful reader.

I read this book myself and found it a bit puzzling and challenging. The book is a series of short stories, poetry and very elaborate sketches. The best way to read it is very slowly and one story at a time. Sort of like eating a very decadent dessert, one needs to pause between bites to savor the richness. It is quite different, a bit surreal, but ultimately enjoyable for those of us who appreciate a little strangeness in our day. It is a quick read overall but the extensive drawings invite longer contemplation.

I gave this book in turn to both of my children, ages 9 (girl) and 12 (boy). Both are "gifted" and excellent readers. The text itself was not a challenge for them. Their reactions were quite different however.

My 12 year old son enjoyed it. He drew parallels between many of the short stories and other books he has read. This is a kid who is himself a little different, interested in topics that are perhaps not typical for a preteen. He poured over the illustrations, pointing out bits and pieces that especially intrigued him. The book prompted discussions about the Holocaust, insanity, perception of reality and method of transport for marine animals. Quite the variety! He then went online to see if he could order any more books like it from the library.

He has to say:

"I thought this book was very interesting although it is short. This book is a book of short stories with very interesting topics. I personally liked this book.When I mean interesting I mean strange for example Water Buffalos pointing directions and very wierd foreign exchange students. So I hope you will enjoy the book Tales from Outer Suburbia . "

My daughter read about half the book and told me that it was "too weird" and that
"GPS buffalos" and exchange students who live in the closet do not belong in the same book. Perhaps it is a question of maturity, or maybe even gender, but she wanted nothing more to do with it.

I think this book will appeal to those with a quirky outlook on life, those who are willing to dig a little deeper into literature and those who are very visual. From my experience, the book requires a certain level of maturity and experience with other literature for true enjoyment.

Fanciful Fiction

This is an interesting book, to say the least. It says it's for kids 12 and older, and I would agree. Younger children would probably find it... a bit confusing.

There are a number of short stories, some as short as a page. The illustrations are pretty cool, and there are a lot of them. A couple of the stories have quite a few pages of drawings to go with the short text. They help to flesh out the story more visually.

When I said some may find them confusing, I mean that the author doesn't really end the stories. They are mostly open ended, making the reader ask some questions, and continue the story in their own mind and imagination. This isn't a bad thing at all, it's a good way to get kids to stretch their minds a bit. But for some with extremely short attention spans, or too young, it can be a little trying.

One of my favorites was about what happens to poetry that no one reads, gets tucked away in books, behind things, etc. It was pretty much entirely illustrated. You read it on scraps of paper that seem to have randomly come together to create the story. Quite inventive, and imaginative.

About the Author

There she trained pastors and church workers from all regions of the former Soviet Union. While in Europe she also represented Latvia at a 27-nation prayer conference in Budapest, Hungary. She has served her church as a teacher, prayer leader and youth sponsor, and been a frequent speaker to women's groups. She is the mother of six children and grandmother to five and presently resides with her husband in Page, Arizona.

Ginger Carlton served many years as a pastor's secretary and principal of her church's Christian school. She and her husband have supported their local church in every manner of Helps ministries. Ginger has many talents in the area of computer services and has been a college instructor and business woman in that field. She presently resides with her husband in Avondale, Arizona and is the mother of two sons and "Granny" to two grandsons.

One of our discoveries was that the Feasts of Israel are keys to end times prophecy. When you were in school, the teachers wouldn't give you the answers to your math problems, but they gave you the tools to figure it out yourself. We won't be giving you all the answers either, but we'll point you in the right direction for your own study and give you some tools to work with.

We have attempted to lay out a foundation of information regarding the Spring and Fall Feasts of the Lord. In order to understand some of the concepts about the timing of the Feasts, we have included information about the Hebrew calendar. We have also included chapters on the Tabernacle, Marriage & Adultery, and Kingship to better help you understand the point of view from which John wrote the book of Revelation.

Follow the Feasts to Understanding

I have several books and commentaries related to Revelation in my home library. The authors of every one of them approach this book of the Bible with a specific rapture scenario in mind (i.e., pre-, mid-, or post-trib). Some commentators, unfortunately, will arrange, re-arrange, pre-arrange, twist and manipulate the various verses of Revelation to fit their basic rapture scenario. The authors of "Unlocking the Mysteries of Revelation" have put aside such scenarios and opinions and have allowed the Feasts of the Lord to direct their study of Scripture. As the Spring Feasts were completely and perfectly fulfilled by Jesus with His First Coming, it is logical to conclude that the same will occur with the Fall Feasts at Christ's Second Coming. It is this avenue that Unlocking the Mysteries of Revelation explores.
The authors first provide background material on the tabernacle and the spring and fall feasts. In Chapter 3, a "Passover/Resurrection Chart" is presented that is accompanied by one of the clearest and best explanations dealing with the specific day of the week that Christ was crucified on that I have ever read. This is followed by two very informative and interesting chapters: Marriage & Adultery and Kingship. With the information that these chapters provide, it is the authors' intent to give their readers a basic understanding of the Feasts that will hopefully lead to greater insight into the book of Revelation -- insight that will "unlock" passages of Scripture that may have been a "mystery" before.
The book is in large format that allows readers to jot down personal notes and information. In addition to this, there are "key" and "lock" symbols in the margins -- an interesting and unique feature that highlight important words or concepts.
If you are looking for specific answers to problematic passages in Revelation from the authors, I'm afraid you'll be disappointed. Wonderfully easy to understand and a powerful learning tool!

Anyone that has a basic knowledge of the Bible, yet doesn't seem to be able to understand all the little bits and pieces and how they tie in together should read this book. I have tried several times to read Revelation, but it always frightened me and I couldn't figure out what all the symbolisms meant. Unlocking the Mysteries of Revelation does just that, it provides "keys" to unlocking all the confusion of the book of Revelation that John wrote.
It's very clear that these authors have spent many years of indepth study, and detailed research to be able to produce a study of this magnitude. Obviously, the Lord's hand guided them throughout, as this book could not have been produced without His divine intervention. The "keys" and "locks" of references and cross references make it very easy to keep tract of the various subjects that relate to each other.
I had never known that there was any significance to the feasts that were mentioned so often in the Bible, but I now understand that everything that is written in the Bible has a definite purpose and meaning. This study is a "must" for anyone that really wants to understand what the second coming of Jesus is about. It is well written, using clear and concise terminology, and very easy to understand. There is a pure joy in reading this book and learning how to Unlock the Mysteries of Revelation.

A tool to study jewish ceremonies

I was faily dissapointed since I expected the authors to actually show the connection they claim they've discovered between the feasts and the comings of Jesus Christ. Old Testament does indeed point to Jesus more often than not, so the title was quite intriguing. What the book does offer though is a totally different matter. Starts out with the description of the sacrificial ceremonies and priest garments etc... As an introduction it's ok, and maybe it's even useful to know, but this goes on for chapters and chapters. I think there's only one chapter dedicated specifically to discussing Revelation and feasts, where the authors incourage you to do your own study. Hm.. The other thing is they bring certain accounts into the book and don't reveal the sources. Not a good thing to do when dealing with understanding the Bible. I wish I understood what the other readers liked about the book.

This carefully researched and lively edition of a part of Chaucer's masterwork is richly and beautifully produced. While Cohen admits that "Chaucer's words are best," her prose adaptation of four of his tales captures the zest and vigor of Middle English and makes his stories accessible to the modern child. This is not a pedantic translation or a bowdlerized retelling; Cohen does not substitute weak cliches for Chaucer's rollicking and earthy metaphors, nor does she sacrifice the rhythms of his text. Readers hear the bickering of the pilgrims as they decide on which tale they want to hear next, and the rambling voice of the good Sir John as he laments Chaunticleer's fate. Hyman's meticulous drawings not only evoke the rich panoply of 14th century England, but they are faithful to the text in the smallest detail. Grade 3 Up Cohen has chosen wisely to adapt four stories from Chaucer's masterpiece for children with an overview of the pilgrimage, whetting the appetite for the real thing. She doesn't bowdlerize as Farjeon (Hale, 1930) and McCaughrean (Childrens, 1984; o.p.), who included more stories, had to. Cohen's choices: ``The Nun's Priest's Tale'' (Chauntecleer), ``The Pardoner's Tale'' (revelers in search of death), ``The Wife of Bath's Tale'' (variant of Sir Gawain and the Loathly Lady), and ``The Franklin's Tale'' (honor, fidelity, and generosity). She has given equal importance and depth to the tellers and to the tales. Her language, as always, is clear and fine. Hyman's glowing watercolors, bordered in gold, illuminate the tales. She has not painted the characters in flat, medieval style, but has given them the depth that the tales do, bringing them to life, dressed precisely as Chaucer described them, captured in a medieval frame, as Chaucer had framed them in the pilgrimage. One degree of separation...

The question is not whether to read the Canterbury Tales, but whether to read them in this translation -- or whether to go for the Middle English with all its difficulties.

I'm a purist. As a Chaucer teacher myself, I'd say read the tales in the Riverside Chaucer or in the Norton Critcal editon with lots of footnotes. But, yes, that is harder, and I'd rather see readers get some experience than none.

So, if you are going to compromise, Nevill Coghill's poetic translation is really as good a place to go as any. You will get the basic sense of Chaucer's verse; you'll get the basic rhymes and rhythms too. This is the translation that's used in most high school classes, and in many college survey classes that don't read the text in the original. It's really a fine compromise -- not only a good place to start, but also a decent trot if you are struggling with the Middle English.

You can find some closer translations of some of the tales online if you look up Michael Murphy's websites. But for all their virtues, they don't have the smoothness of Coghill's renditions; Murphy's translations are not the complete Tales; and it's clunky to print them out. This economical edition is probably still the best place to start with Chaucer, father of English poetry and the originator of comedy in the English language.

In my humble opinion, this is the best version for the Kindle (Paperwhite, Voyage) or the iPhone (4.7 screen or smaller).

There is also a side-by-side version of this text, which would be better for a Kindle Fire or iPad, iPhone (5.5 screen).

This has a comparative version and a modern version. It is very easy to read and understand. Middle English although poetic, can be overwhelming. The Canterbury Tales is a masterpiece, and deserves a place besides Shakespeare.

A hostile expression of supersessionism.

Ateek is one of the world's most popular liberation theologians. Sadly, his view of liberation ends with Exodus and does not include the rest of the Pentateuch, which details how God starts holding ancient Israelites accountable – even during their time in the wilderness. Dennis T. Olson highlights this issue in his commentary on Numbers:

“Before Sinai, Israel was like a newly adopted child who did not yet know the rules of the household. God, the divine Parent, bent over backwards to satisfy the legitimate needs of an Israel immediately out of Egypt. But by the time we reach Numbers, the people of Israel know their responsibilities in the law and the commandments. Israel must take responsibility and is answerable for its relationship to God.”

Nowhere in Justice and Only Justice does Ateek level any expectations at the Palestinian people. Instead he directs his condemnations at Israel and Jews.

In Ateek’s writing Christian supersessionism merges with Islamic supersessionism in the Middle East to form a united front of contempt toward Jewish sovereignty.

theologically astute

atik is both gentle and forceful. his arguments and old testament understanding are *very* biblically and historically grounded. as a christian who has spent a lot of time studying the bible, i find that atik has done an amazing job laying out the groundwork for a very revolutionary liberation theology.
theologically, atik *is not* a premillenialist in his interpretation in hermeneutics (and eschatology, as other essays he's written have shown) so, if one is a premillenialist (which is a very faulty, in my opinion, theological standpoint since it depends on a eurocentric understanding of scripture which was created at the turn of the 20th century and originally dismissed as "heresy")one will not take to kindly to atik's book.
ideologically, the zionist "christian" will confuse atik's understanding of christ as a palestinian. as biblical anthropologists have pointed out, the idea of "jew" as a race did not exist during christ's time. there was only the jewish religion and the national boundaries of Palestine where this religious culture dominated at the time. the racial ideas of "palestinian" and "jew" did not emerge until much later and were only galvanized as a binary in 1948. atik is referring to this historical fact.
the words are wise and compelling. atik has done a lot of research and has grounded everything with a profound understanding of the bible.

Unlike the first reviewer of this book, I am impressed by the author's ability to forgive the occupiers of his native land. After describing the impact of the establisment of Israel and the follow on occupation of Palestinian lands (1967) from a personal perspective (his family was expelled from their home with no notice by the Israeli Army), he tries to find a way for Palestian Christians to understand the situation from a non-literal Biblical perspective.
If more Americans read books like this, we might have a better understanding of what is really happening in the Middle East. Peace will never come until the United States and Israel stand in the shoes of the Palestinians and accept the fact that a huge injustice continues against the Palestinians. Likewise the Palestinians must come to terms with the reality of the modern Israeli State and accept the fact that Israel exists today because of the Holocaust and the resulting sympathy for a Jewish State. This is a position Naim Stifan Ateek proposes.
This is an excellent read, although sometimes a bit depressing.

Perfectly Curated Snark and Sarcasm - Strong Recommend

The Belligerent Book of Movie Quotes is “written” by Danny Marianino. I have written in quotes because as the title of the book suggests, this is a collection of movie quotes so Mr. Marianino didn’t actually pen them…. he curated them. And he did a damn find job at it. He did pen the dedication which I felt like was written directly to me:

This book goes out to the movie fans that can watch a film and remember the horrible things said, in humor or in a threatening manner, and repeat them word for word in their everyday lives.

If that doesn’t describe me I don’t know what does.

I could go on forever quoting my favorite quotes from the book but that would be sort of pointless. If you’re into snark, sarcasm and these types of quotes you’ll absolutely love this collection. The paperback version that I got is less than 100 pages long so it’s a quick and fun read for sure. The book is also full of photos from the films being quoted which is sort of a nice touch.

Be warned though… I think it goes without saying but quite a few of the quotes that Danny has chosen are off color and full of NSFW language and concepts. For me that makes these quotes all the better but some may find them offensive. For those of you that find that sort of stuff offensive I’ll leave you with the immortal words of Clark W. Griswold: “I think you’re all f***ed in the head. We’re ten hours from the f***ing fun park and you want to bail out? Well I’ll tell you something, this is no longer a vacation. It’s a quest. It’s a quest for fun.”

I've had this book for two weeks and anyone that picks it up on my table loves it! I'm buying a few more for some friends. Brought back a lot of memories from films that I had forgotten!

This is one hell of a collection of awesome and ridiculous movie quotes. Like Clubber Lang on the cover, I would pity the fool that didn't pick up this book. This book made me want to crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentations of their women.

Must Buy!!!!
