During the past half-century Holocaust studies have perhaps become the most vital area of historical research. Yet books with the significance of this new history of the Holocaust are rare it is exhaustive as well as consistently insightful. From the opening chapters in which the authors, contradicting popular wisdom, argue that the direct eliminationist roots of the Holocaust are found not so much in the centuries-old European anti-Semitic legal regulations, but in the Inquisition's intention of social purification, the Terror of the French Revolution and the massacre of 1.5 million Armenians by the Turks in 1915 Dwork and van Pelt challenge and provoke. Rather then viewing the Holocaust as a distinct historical phenomenon, the authors do their best to integrate it into a wide range of historical, cultural and social conditions. In discussing the German subjugation of Poland, for example, they focus on how gentile Poles saw the extermination of Jews as a precursor to their own fate; in their discussion of how Jews coped with ghetto life, the authors examine in detail the underground schooling systems that benefited both students and teachers. They also place the history of rescue efforts (usually based on personalities such as Oskar Schindler and Raoul Wallenberg) in a broader and more complicated geographic and social perspective. The book is also filled with fascinating details that challenge our preconceptions for instance, it is a myth, they note, that King Christian of Denmark wore a yellow star in sympathy with his country's Jews, since no Nazi order was ever given for Danish Jews to be so identified. Dwork and Van Pelt are the authors of Auschwitz: 1270 to the Present (1996), a history of the site that has come to epitomize evil. In their new book, their aim is to "untangle the paradoxical developments that led to the murder of six million Jews who--in the heart of a civilization that thought itself the zenith of human history--were identified, disenfranchised, marked, imprisoned, and killed because their existence was seen as a blot on the very civilization to which they had contributed so much." To achieve this goal, the authors examine such issues as the historic relationship between Jews, gentiles, and Germans; World War I and its consequences; National Socialism in the Weimar Republic; the Third Reich and its anti-Semitic measures; worldwide refugee policies that became a disaster for the Jews; and Jewish and gentile life under German occupation. They also examine the efforts by Allied nations to help the Jews and conclude that rescue operations were "small and far between." This is a monumental work of impeccable scholarship. George Cohen

Very informative

This book is highly recommended by me (especially for those interested in the Holocaust). It is very well written, thought provoking, interesting, and difficult to put down. As another reviewer mentioned, the book is certainly not a 'light read'. It is gut wrenching to read about the suffering of so many during the years of the Holocaust. If you purchase "Holocaust: A History", you will absolutely not be disappointed. This book also goes into the holocausts history as a whole.

Overlooked history of the Holocaust

This book almost more a history of anti-semitism, the main focus being anti-semitism during the Holocaust. It deals more with why the Holocaust happened, what the conditions were in Europe that led to it, and what attitudes were like toward the Jews. It explores what conditions were like in occupied countries and how the non-Jews were treated by the Germans. This treatment by the Nazis would often reflect on whether or not the country helped the Nazis in their efforts against the Jews. Many countries would collaborate if the general population was being treated well, but then again many would collaborate if they were being treated harshly and blame the Jews as the cause. The book also deals with the various plans the Nazis came up with in their effort to find the "perfect" plan to dispose of the Jews. There is only one rather short chapter on concentration camps, the rest covers quite a lot of new ground that I haven't read before in books dealing with the Holocaust. I gave it four stars because a few times it seemed to be getting away from the main topic of the book, but all in all it's an exactly source.

Holocaust: A History

This is a superb, hard-to-put-down book. I found it to be well written, well organized, and, as a previous reviewer noted, meticulously footnoted. Consequently, I was surprised at what I found when I checked the source of one of the footnotes. On page 301 of the hardcover edition, the authors, critical of America's skepticism of Nazi atrocities in German-occupied Poland, state that "Time (Magazine) mockingly called the news from Poland the atrocity story of the week." Knowing that Time has an archive website and curious about this charge, I checked the footnoted source, the September 18, 1939 edition of Time (Footnote 54). What Time mocked was not allegations of Nazi atrocities but rather a United Press correspondent and German officers who had claimed that hundreds of German civilians had been killed and mutilated by retreating Poles. I don't doubt that there were some in America back then who doubted Nazi atrocities. Indeed, unfortunately a few still do. But the Time Magazine article does not support the authors' case. I had no interest in checking additional citations and I hope this was an isolated error in an otherwise outstanding book.

Basic ABG book

I found the book an interesting read. Very basic, but quite well done, reminded me of a few forgotten titbits. Only the person reading it can determine whether this book satisfies their requirements. There are a few minor mistakes and typos, but the case study of the patient with diabetic ketoacidosis has major conceptual mistakes.

Simple as ABG

This is an easy to understand book about ABG's. The problem is that when there is an ABG to diagnose it doesn't show up on the Kindle,it just has a blank space where you should be reading it. I think it is missing the main point by not being able to read the actual ABG. Everything else about the book is good.

About the Author
John C. Waller was born in England in 1972. He gained a 'double first' in Modern History at the University of Oxford and went on to take Masters degrees in Human Biology and the History of Science and Medicine. He completed his Ph.D. in the History and Philosophy of Science at University College London in 2001. He is now a Lecturer in the History of Medicine at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

Science's Seamy Side

The science establishment admits that science is an `industry' exposed to market pressures: relentless demand for usable output, the need to promote its products and to parry bad publicity, the need to reconcile conflicts of interest between marketable research outcomes and validity of those outcomes (especially acute in the pharmaceutical industry). Today bogus science so widespread that the catchphrase `junk science' has become a label to nullify the prestige of the `science' label adeptly used to recruit the credibility of the naïve or the uninformed. Another effect is the nearly universal institution of codes of conduct to for scientists.

Waller bypasses this contemporary territory to come at his theme in a series of case studies of historically high profile achievements that have proved to be somewhat inflated, or outright `fabulous'. Among his cases are Louis Pasteur's disproof of spontaneous generation, Arthur Eddington's experimental proof of Einstein's general relativity theory, Joseph Lister's introduction of surgical antisepsis; Alexander Fleming's discovery of penicillin, Robert Millikan's discovery of the electron, and Darwin's `proof' of evolution. In each case the author identifies the legend to be corrected and then takes us inside the story of what actually happened. We are shown something of the personalities of the scientists involved and their motivation. The lesson concludes with guesses about why they behaved as they did and how they got away with it. I'll mention just one of Waller's cases.

It is the famous debate between Bishop Samuel Wilberforce and Thomas Huxley at a session of the 1860 British Association for the Advancement of Science, held in Oxford. According to legend, the encounter occurred before a packed auditorium filled by anticipation of a confrontation between the eloquent Wilberforce, defending the permanence of species, and Huxley, defending evolution. Legend says that Wilberforce displayed his ignorance of Darwin's theory and was trounced and humiliated by the acerbic Huxley. The legendary debate condenses to an aphorism: Wilberforce taunted Huxley with the question whether he was descended from the ape on his father's side or his mother's side, to which Huxley retorted that he would rather be descended from an ape than from an august authority who abused his trust to obfuscate the truth. The devastating reply shifted the audience from partiality to the orthodox view to up-and-coming evolutionism. This had the larger significance that, for the first time, science openly challenged religion and proclaimed the two modes of thought must go separate ways. As Hallam puts it: `The [debate] ...was a landmark in the victory of scientific reason over faith and obfuscation. At least that is how Huxley & Co saw it. Were they right? Well, not exactly.'

First slippage: three journalists reported the session, but none mentioned the Wilberforce ape ancestry challenge and the Huxley rejoinder. Indeed, Huxley had said in previous conference sessions that he was not ashamed to admit his pithacoid ancestry. Second slippage: the `inextinguishable laughter' from the audience that Huxley, in correspondence, boasted that his retort produced is not reported by the journalists or others who commented on the event. These sources include Darwin's supporters Charles Lyell and Joseph Hooker. Third slippage: the session was not billed as a debate between Huxley and Wilberforce, but as a paper on the historical conflict between science and religion by one Dr John Draper, to be followed by open discussion. The audience expected Wilberforce to speak, but not Huxley, who attended the meeting only on a last minute decision. Fourth slippage: According to a statement in correspondence shortly after the event, Huxley's argument was not particularly effective or audible to the large audience. Wilberforce was indeed put down, but by botanist Joseph Hooker. The source? Joseph Hooker in a letter to Darwin! Fifth slippage: there is no record of what Wilberforce said, but we do have his review of the Origin that appeared shortly after the Oxford meeting. There he shows himself well acquainted with Darwin's book. Invoking his ecclesiastical office, he expressly defended Darwin's right to be heard. He accepted the principle of natural selection, but says that it is a well-known principle of species conservation (by eliminating the maladapted). He argued that Darwin simply recycled the opinions of his grandfather, Erasmus Darwin. Sixth slippage: Wilberforce's comments on the session express satisfaction that he had met the challenge handsomely. Waller's conclusion: Huxley's boastful letter, on which the legend is based, was a `face-saving device' of a man so immobilized by anger that he couldn't effectively speak. So Huxley was fibbing. In particular, his contention that Wilberforce engaged in deliberate obfuscation is unfounded. Waller concludes that the audience was fairly evenly divided between the two sides, each confident in its opinion. My own investigation of this debate reached the same conclusion, but with one difference: that it occurred at all, under British Association auspices, was a landmark in the transition to public acceptance of evolution. In that sense, the legend communicates a historical truth, but dressed in the mystique of the Darwin cult.

An amusing and informative book debunking some of the mythology surrounding famous scientists.

This book analyses some of the more dubious aspects of the conduct of famous scientists without disparaging much of what has been achieved. This is not a book that advances the idea that science is essentially rubbish, but rather one that analyses how fame has often been misappropriated and that highly deserving individuals have not achieved the recognition they deserve whilst less scrupulous but more self-serving scientists have advanced their own reputations by dubious means. It puts many of the famous scientists into a more human category and removes them from the heroic pedestals to which they have been inappropriately elevated. For those who like their science carefully analysed for its accuracy as well as the myths that have accumulated around individuals, this is an interesting and entertaining read.

A Reasonable Book, Let Down Badly By the Lack of Proof Reading and Copy Editing

The actual content of this book is moderately good. Very basic. Nothing earth shattering, although it is definitely doable advice for someone new to the concept of making a living via the internet. What lets the book down very badly is the lack of professional proof reading and copy editing. There are numerous errors in the copy that could have been picked up and corrected by a halfway decent editor.

This flies in the face of much of the advice Chris Karlas repeats constantly: always provide your audience with the highest possible content.

Also, throughout the book, the author repeatedly directs readers to his website to see and use "links" to products and resources he recommends. These are all Affiliate Links which pay him a percentage for every purchase he creates. It did seem that the entire book is nothing more than a funnel, filtering gullible readers to his affiliate products to garner sales. A reasonable concept I suppose, considering the entire subject of the book to aimed at explaining how to make money online.

About the Author

Rebecca Donatelle is a professor emeritus in Public Health and was the Coordinator of the Public Health Promotion and Education Programs in the College of Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University. She has a PhD in Community Health/Health Education, a Master of Science degree in Health Education, and a Bachelor of Science degree with majors in both Health/Physical Education and English. She is also a Certified Health Education Specialist. In addition to her varied teaching responsibilities, Becky has been an active researcher in the area of health behaviors and behavior change. She received the Leadership Award, outstanding teacher award in her college, and a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Presidential Award for Promising New Research in the Smoke-Free Families National Initiative.

Health Class is Lame

This was a required book for a college health class. The book itself is pretty lame and mostly an insult to the average person's intelligence, but seeing as it was required and I HAD to buy it, it was a really good price compared to what the college bookstore charges. I bought it used on here for next to nothing and it's literally like sparkling brand new! No marks in it and hardly any wear. (Maybe the last person who used it thought it sucked too and never read it.) However, I can't fathom any reason anyone would buy this unless it was a required text for a class.

I originally bought this collection of Goal Setting Forms for my children, but quickly found myself making fast work of it for my own personal needs.
What you receive is a collection (multiple) of different forms, each with it's own purpose, and all designed to help you identify, plan, and post your goals for easy review and reinforcement. I highly recommend it for anyone of any age.

I have bought several of the books from The GoalsGuy series and was looking for tools that would help me to set my goals, not just keep them in my head. This collection is worth every penny and I highly recommend it. They are several types, each of which are helpful.

Still working on this one

The trouble with uncontrolled adult A.D.D. is that purchasing the goal-setting forms is just one-tenth of the battle. Another tenth is admitting you have a problem. Another tenth is sorting out what your goals are versus what they should be. Another tenth is figuring out how to organize your life so that you can be goal-oriented.. well, you get the picture. I love the book. It has so much potential. I just need to keep working on making it work for me.
