Great companion to the Goonies film!

If you've ever wondered what it was like to get behind the scenes and get a non hollywood view of a film, this is it! And the movie is the Goonies! Coming 25 or so years after the movie, a young aspiring director lands an "internship" job with Goonies Director Richard Donner and finds himself on the set of the Goonies. This book is a great account of what it would be like to be a fly on the wall on the set. The author gives great account of the filming of this classic movie while it shot on location in his hometown of Astoria, Oregon. He has some great never before stories, as well as movie information never before recounted. This is a must have for any Goonies fan and even for those who enjoy a good behind the scenes book of a movie. Goonies never say Die!

I bought this book after seeing a copy at the Oregon Film Museum in Astoria (in the old jail from the movie) and talking with a guest there who was actually part of the film crew (he showed me his picture in the book). For anyone who is a Goonies fan, this book is filled with great stories and pictures and is the next best thing to actually being there during the filming. It was great for me after visiting all of the sites from the movie. I recommend to any fan of the Goonies.

A sweet story of one of God's creatures

I have followed the 'LCC Comfort Dogs' for a couple of years found out about this book through a Facebook post. I am so glad I bought it. The story is well written and engaging. I read it in one sitting. The book gives insight into the way dogs connect with humans. The story is one of two 'co-workers' and how they get to know each other. I love the way the dog knows who needs them. I almost felt like I 'knew' the dog personally. While the ending of the book is sad, I came away from reading it with a smile on my face. This ministry has found a way to bring us closer to God and some of the wonderful creatures He has created.

Learn what LCC K9 Comfort Dogs do

Enjoyed reading about the life of a LCC K9 Comfort Dog. If you are a Dog Lover have your tissues handy. These dogs are such wonderful missionaries. I became aware of their existence after the tragedy at near by Sandy Hook elementary school. Now our church has a Comfort Dog as a member of our congregation and will be getting a second one this summer. Although we see her at church, those of us in the congrats tin really don't know the extent of her work. This book gave me a glimpse.

Don't get me wrong- I love this product and find it helpful with my schooling and career but I found a razor stuck between the pages when I just opened it. Needless to say I am NOT impressed.

Bad Printing! Unusable.

Make sure you go through this book in entirety after purchasing. i just realized, after a few months of owning, that the page progression is out of number. my copy goes from page 200 to page 400 back to 230; etc... and its not returnable. there are also many blank pages at the end.

500 pages long and yet it's missing so much

Paul Trynka put together a very long, detailed biography of David Bowie (without speaking to the artists of course) and it still doesn't really get the job done despite the length.
In close to 500 pages I learned very little (or nothing at all) about some very important things in David Bowie's legendary career.
Want to know how the infamous, ground-breaking video for "Ashes To Ashes" was done in 1980 and who came up with the ideas? Not here. Want to learn about how Bowie landed the role in Labyrinth in 1986 which was largely panned by critics but became a hit anyway and still has a large following, and was put together by Jim Henson of Muppets fame? Or about the music Bowie did for it? Not here.
What about the bizarre, yet beautiful collaboration with Bing Crosby on "Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy" in 1977? Barely a mention. Really? The collaboration on the hit single "This Is Not America" with the Pat Metheny Group in 1985? Nope-not even mentioned.
How about getting Pete Townshend to lay down the guitar solo on "Slow Burn" in 2002? Nope! Or singing on Adrian Belew's 1990 hit "Pretty Pink Rose"? Of course not.
Not even a word about the controversial cover art of the Diamond Dogs album! How is this possible? Or David's appearance on SNL in 1979 and so on.
But if you want to know what his nanny from the 70's had to say or some friends he hasn't seen in 40 years, this is the book for you. There's even some quotes attributed to nobody at all.
Trynka also annoyingly puts his opinions on the music throughout which should not be done. He has a seperate section for that in the back of the book, so why inject yourself in the narrative?
I still can't completely condemn the book as there are patches of good info and it is detailed (focusing way too much on the 60's). But flaws galore, some pretentious writing and not mentioning so many events was disappointing to say the least. No way this book is 5 stars.

Good Journalistic Account of Bowie's life

I can't bring myself to assign 5 stars to a straightforward biography about a rock star but this is a good journalistic review of Bowie's life. By "journalistic", I mean a style that is chronological, well sourced, focused on the subject, striving for a balanced presentation that, net net, is modestly sympathetic without being fawning (although there are one or two passages which could be described as fawning), and relatively crisp (although it is pretty hefty) with not much psychoanalysis, sociology, musical analysis or authorial intrusion.

Bowie and his family do not seem to have actively cooperated in it but the author appears to have quite a number of sources who talk on the record.

He has a nice balance about what to focus on and what to glide over, and the chapter leading up to the release of Ziggy Stardust was excellent, conveying the professional excitement and pleasure of numerous participants who recognized, as they made it, that they were working on a breakthrough in their field.

Extremely detailed for Bowie Lovers

I loved this book. It has so many details from the entirety of DB's career and life. Probably a realistic portrayal of DB--not always flattering, but seems honest. For those who love DB (and I don't know who else would read the book...) there are lots of details about the writing of different songs and albums, which was really cool. The book gives an interesting view into the process by which he writes albums/songs. If you are reading it out of a general interest in rock music, it might be more detailed than you want, but I think it's a great amount of detail. I'm really glad I bought it so I can read it again and again. Discography is great too.

A Unified Approach-At Last!

I have read some excellent books and survey papers describing particular domains of the evolutionary computation field, but this book try to give us a "Unified Approach" of this field.

I find very interesting the author's idea to model the evolutionary process with a dynamic (nonlinear!)system so that "...given particular initial conditions the system follows a trajectory over time through a complex evolutionary state space. One can than study various aspects of these processes such as their convergence properties, their sensitivity to initial conditions, their transient behavior and so on."[pg. 2 of the book]. And, I can add, why not "chaotically behaviors".

Great book for a theoretical overview

This book shows a unified view of genetic algorithms, genetic programming, and related fields. It includes some discussion of the historical development of the disciplines and presents the theory behind them.

However, while it does fit an undergrad course, it is not a book for practitioners, since most algorithms are not explained in detail.

Home Run in age regression stories!!!

This is what I was looking for in the book that has ten POV tales!!!! In this anthology Susan knocks it out of the park. All seven stories are enjoyable, well thought out, and complete. I left each story satisfied with the ending and where the characters were left off. Definitely worth the price and read.

The Editors: Lourdes Diaz Soto is the Goizueta Endowed Chair at Dalton State College. Some of her publications include The Praeger Handbook of Latino Education in the U.S.; The Politics of Early Childhood Education (Peter Lang, 2000); Making a Difference in the Lives of Bilingual/Bicultural Children (Peter Lang, 2002).
Haroon Kharem is Associate Professor of Education at Brooklyn College and has been teaching African American history at Performing Arts & Technology High School (PATHS) in Brooklyn for the past four years. His recent publication is Education As Freedom: African American Educational Thought and Activism. He is currently working on a book on African Americans and the African Free Schools in New York City Antebellum Period.
