In this updated edition, Craig Unger probes with documents and intelligence sources into the religious extremism of Saudi Arabia under its particular brand of Wahhabi Islam espoused by the royal House of Saud. He shows that the seeds for the 'age of terrorism' were planted nearly 30 years ago in the Kingdom, fanned through the long-lived business and governmental connections between the House of Saud and House of Bush. It is a relationship that is seemingly at times difficult to distinguish from favouritism. Unger shows how as alongside the relationship, the flame of terrorism was kindled as a by-product through the growth of a complex financial network, at one stage comprising the fraudulent bank of BCCI (currently the cause Bank of England litigation). Unger shows that to this day (even immediately after 9/11) the Bush Administration has been curiously reluctant to stem the financial life-blood of terrorism by clamping down on Saudi Arabia. Despite its rhetoric on being tough, he shows that the Bush Administration has been fighting a war of mirrors with the press rather than organise effective curbs on terrorist financing. Equally, he shows how Saudia Arabia is only half-heartedly dealing with the internal problems it has because of the tensions between its autocratic rule and its fundamentalist state religion that condones Saudi punishments such as beheading and cutting off of hands for petty crimes.

W. Bush. In this potentially explosive book, investigative journalist Unger, who has written for the New Yorker, Esquire and Vanity Fair, pieces together the highly unusual and close personal and financial relationships between the Bush family and the ruling family of Saudi Arabia—and questions the implications for Bush's preparedness, or possible lack thereof, for September 11. What could forge such an unlikely alliance between the leader of the free world and the leaders of a stifling Islamic theocracy? First and foremost, according to Unger, is money. He compiles figures in an appendix indicating over $1.4 billion worth of business between the Saudi royal family and businesses tied (sometimes loosely) to the House of Bush, ranging from donations to the Bush presidential library to investments with the Carlyle Group ("a well-known player in global commerce" for which George H.W. Bush has been a senior advisor and his secretary of state, James Baker, is a partner), to deals with Halliburton, of which Dick Cheney was CEO. James Baker’s law firm even defended the House of Saud in a lawsuit brought by relatives of victims of September 11. Unger also questions whether the Bush grew so complacent about the Saudis that his administration ignored then White House terrorism czar Richard Clarke’s repeated warnings and recommendations about the Saudis and al-Qaeda. Another question raised by Unger’s research is whether millions in Saudi money given to U.S. Muslim groups may have delivered a crucial block of Muslim votes to George W. Bush in 2000—and it’s questions like that will make some readers wonder whether Unger is applying a chainsaw to issues that should be dissected with a scalpel. But whether one buys Unger’s arguments or not, there’s little doubt that with this intensely researched, well-written book he has poured more flame onto the political fires of 2004.

How Do You Spell Corruption?

This book will test you. When you wonder aloud why Congress doesn’t get anything done, foreign wars continue without reason and deficits are so high, most are unable to see the cause. Unger doesn’t explain it all but he explains the relationship between money and power better than any book I’ve read to date.
The storyline of the book takes you through how the rich Saudi ruling class and really a group of Texan oilmen bonded over business. When you read about the genesis of the relationship in the 70s during the first part of the book, it looked merely like the cozy insider-only type of stuff that is common in the fabric of corporate America and most human relationships.
But the nuance Unger uncovers with his hawk-like ability to pull minutiae from rivers of source material outlines a darker agenda. His fact finding mission lays bare a Saudi elite trying to nudge the levers of power in Washington. And with this insight, Unger explains the nearly invisible pattern in which money buys powers in America. Unger’s work uncovers so many conspicuous connections amongst so many smart, ambitious men that coincidence is ruled out as the cause. Complicity makes the case here as well as any outsider like Unger can.
But the circumstantial nature of this book cannot be completely swept away. Unger has grokked the nefarious nature of this relationship but is missing the proverbial smoking gun. There is no ipso facto ‘A funded B which lead to C relationship’ outlined in the book. The closest we get to this as a reader is when the Bin Laden family and other Saudi royals are ferried out of the country while the FAA has all airspace on lockdown, a fascinating story that makes the TSA’s security theatre we endure at every airport comically irksome.
Recommending this book is easy, but to whom I would make that recommendation is difficult. If you sometimes watch/read the news with an open mind and wonder, “How did we get to this place?”, then I’d put this book on your list. If you’re knowledge of the middle east and current events is low, try paying attention to that news first, watch for the patterns and then read this to learn the connections. Most importantly though, any citizen trying to understand the ways in which money buys power in the modern nation-state needs to read this book.

The problem of writing a review of the item lies in the condition of the item when I attempted to play it. I bought it as a 'used' item; my mistake. The seller apparently was on vacation and a temporary employee failed to quality check the item prior to packaging it for shipment to me. When I attempted to listen to the item, it became apparent that the disks were damaged to the extent of being played at random and garbled. I contacted the seller and the seller acknowledged my concern by refunding my purchase. SO with that, I can admit to not being able to give you an accurate rating because I couldn't hear the reader in a continuous and sequential reading of the book. I would have enjoyed it to the extent of giving it a FIVE STAR rating.....I think.

I'm so glad we will never have to live through another eight ...

I wish more people had read this book prior to the 2004 election and that it got much more press than it did. I'm so glad we will never have to live through another eight years of this "president's" electoral mess. Good riddance and stay away forever, Bushwacked.
