The Expat Partner's Survival Guide, by Clara Wiggins

"Amazing - full of information. I wish I'd had this book when I first became an expat wife" - Brigid Keenan, author of Diplomatic Baggage and Packing Up.

From how to organise an overseas move to what to do in the event of an earthquake, the Expat Partner’s Survival Guide is a light-hearted yet in-depth guide for anyone accompanying their partner on an overseas assignment.

In our increasingly globalised society, more and more people are moving to another country to work – and many of these people are taking their partners and families with them.

What does it feel like to sit at home alone in a strange country on the first day your partner leaves for work? How easy is it to find the right school for your child – and what happens if your child hates it there? Where exactly are you going to track down all the ingredients needed for tonight’s dinner? And what happens when it all goes very, very wrong?

This authoritative guide draws on the expert advice of more than 70 expat partners who have been there, done that and survived to tell their tales. The experts include author Clara Wiggins, who spent her childhood as a ‘trailing daughter’ accompanying her diplomat parents on various exotic postings including the Philippines and Venezuela. She later saw life from the other side, when was posted to Jamaica and then took her young family on her husband’s postings to Islamabad and St Lucia.

She is currently preparing for another move, to South Africa.

About the Author
Born in Cuba to British diplomat parents, Clara started travelling as a baby and hasn’t stopped since. She’s lived in eleven countries on five continents, and visited nearly 70. She will soon be on her way to country number twelve – South Africa. Along the way, Clara has picked up a husband and produced two daughters. She’s worked as a journalist, a diplomat, a writer, a press officer, an antenatal teacher, a customer service advisor, a PA, a coffee shop waitress and a school cook. Which only lasted for a day. If Clara had any spare time she would spend it diving and getting better at taking photographs. In reality, she spends her days writing, looking out of the window and picking things up off the floor.

For all expats and their spouses
By Olga Mecking
This book is important for everyone who has every thought of moving abroad, is living abroad as a spouse to someone who is on an abroad assignment. It has so much information, tips and real-life experiences. "The Expat Partner's Survival Guide" describes all the problems you may encounter as an expat and does so with a lighthearted tone of voice. But it doesn't mean it lacks information. On the contrary, it will take you by the hand and lead you through all the various issues and challenges you may encounter as an expat spouse, some of them obvious, others very unusual. It also includes a list of resources. Definitely worth the read!

Covers all the ground and more
By RockApe
The practical advice in the book, especially in the first few chapters about preparations and settling in, will be valid for most people faced with the task of moving to a new country – not just trailing spouses. The author succeeds in systematising a mammoth task: the information and advice is very methodical and the tone is always reassuring but never unrealistic. The book is guaranteed to help even the most chaotic person get organised, and will definitely guide anyone who is feeling overwhelmed.

The author also does a very thorough job of covering all aspects of the process of moving, settling in, the stages of culture shock, all the practical elements like accommodation, domestic staff, shopping, entertainment, friendships, relationships, kids, pets, schools, health… as well a broad variety of personal circumstances, the big and not-so-big challenges, the positives and negatives, and repatriation and the very important but often overlooked issue of reverse culture shock.

Another strong point is that the book is very clearly and coherently written. Easy and entertaining to read, it is a lot like having a friendly conversation with the author, as the main narrator, with plenty of real-life examples and experiences and useful tips, and just the right amount of interesting interjections from her diverse chorus of contributors. It is never preachy, and is peppered with gentle touches of humour.

Anyone who purchases this book should read it from cover to cover before they move and continue dipping back into it as a reference throughout the process.

Helpful advice from those been there/doing this!
By targaholic
I'd recommend this book to someone thinking about joining expat life. There's so much to consider- it's almost overwhelming to try and explain it all to someone. The best way to learn is of course, by doing- but some of us like a peek into the future. This is a helpful download of info. An appetizer, for the main course.
